Roles of the Participants

Students

The competition will consist of five case teams with four students on each team. The teams will be selected by application based on general business expertise, presentation skills, ability to create valuation models, and interest in venture capital. The teams will have access to a Goizueta MBA who will act exclusively as an advisor to assist with any serious dilemmas the students may face

Venture Capital Judges

The judging panel, comprised of venture capitalists from the Atlanta area, will score each student case team using the Judging Forms that will be provided at the competition. The criteria used to evaluate the case teams will be as follows:

  • Due diligence sessions – 40% - The ability of the students to communicate with the entrepreneurs, derive important information within the 15 minute time limit, and translate their intention as an investing firm in a simple, yet professional manner.
  • Pitchbook and Tangibles – 45% - This consists of the executive summary, term sheet, and PowerPoint ® presentation. The judges should identify the team of students who have evaluated the needs of the entrepreneur and offered an adequate investment decision. Some guiding questions include: How well grounded is the student teams investment decision and strategy? Does the espoused investment plan satisfy the needs of the corresponding business plan? Is the investment plan concisely summarized with the strengths and weaknesses delineated? Are potential challenges addressed?
  • Intangibles – 15% - The ability of the students to interact with the entrepreneurs during the due diligence sessions, to answer questions during Q&A with the judges, overall presentation skills, and general professionalism.

Entrepreneurs

The entrepreneurs will provide their business plans to the planning committee before the competition. On the first day of the competition the entrepreneurs will have 15 minutes to pitch their business plans to the students. After the presentations the entrepreneurs will field questions from each of the student teams during the due-diligence sessions. Each team will spend 15 minutes with each entrepreneur where they will ask any questions that may aid them in making a final investment decisions. This will be the last point of contact between the students and entrepreneurs until the students give the final presentations.
